ALBUM REVIEW: Slimboy tells you to Sail on Sailor

Slimboy kick off their album with “Falling Apart” a great fast paced and grooved piece of pop punk with a very catchy tune and clean clear vocals. “Heart’s all gone” keeps the fast paced approach but with a little bit more of a punchy rock feel. It might remind you a little of The Outcast, which is no bad thing. Then comes the recently released single “Let it Go” which has a passing resemblance to Green Day.

The band take it down a notch with “Sorrows” a sweet little ballad like track that perfectly sets off what has come before. An emotionally bitter sweet song. A more pop like song “Whatever” is a great little track that just flows along nicely as the guitars, drums, bass and vocals intermix to produce a full formed light touch song with a bit of a nod to rock.

Then you have “Believe in You” as it starts of slowly and forlornly before it slowly builds as it goes along. A good solid emotional track. “Downfall” kicks off the pace again as it chugs along with a good energetic speed that makes you want to jump around the house for a bit. Next comes “Freak” which really punches through the speed barrier with a fast fun rhythm before it takes a slow motion dander and guitar solo.

The penultimate track gives you “So-Called Unity” with a very light touch of Iron Maidenesque guitar work. This is actually a really great wee track as it fires on through to the end. And the final track is “Life Death (Ghost of You)” which rounds off the album nicely.

With each track averaging about two and a half minutes the ten tracks give a great fast paced punch throughout and the shortness of the songs keeps everything moving along well. A perfect punk attitude. Definitely a great little album and the band are one that it would be good to see live.

Sail on Sailor is re-released on 10 August on via NiRo music.
