ALBUM REVIEW: AT THE SUN Ask To “Leave Before The Light”

Londoners AT THE SUN have teased us with a couple of single releases from this album last year, “Soak It Up” and “Lay It on Me” and I had been looking forward to hearing the album in its entirety. A nice starter to open the taste buds for the main course so to Speak.

Full of rip roaring hard and heavy riffs, soaring solos and powerful pulsating, this album is a treat for the ear drums. So much that’s good especially in the really huge tracks.

‘Preacher ‘is packed out tight with meaty riffs and a pile of attitude. ‘Only A Fool’ snarling winding riffs, an aggressive vocal and huge melody running through the whole thing.

‘Breathe’ carries this on with a bucket load of snarls and grime ebbing through into melodic tunefulness and a catchy chorus. ‘Walk On Over’ has a slower vibe, grimy riffs and a slogging drum beat, still full of energy, this is a nice change of pace.

‘Lay It On Me’ makes sure you have to shuffle about in your socks, impossible to sit still and listen to this one.

‘Lifetime’ is a meld of guitar riffs flooding through and providing the waves for the vocal to ride on. I love this track, it has an emotion to it, the lyrics and melody etching into your head and imprinting there.

‘Devil In Your Eyes’ and ‘Bite Your Tongue’ continue the power packed, punchy melodies, dirty riffs and catchy lyrics. Big songs delivered with style and swagger.

‘Indestructible’ slows things down a little again, keeping with the riffage but Dale giving it more soul than some of the other tracks, there’s a lovely pause before the main riff floods in adding interest into the track. With “Renegade’ the massiveness is back, hitting you hard in the gut with aggressive riffs and a vocal to match. ‘Soak It Up’ winds in the warbling riffs and power packed drumming, another up-tempo track that makes you really want to see and hear these guys live!

The final track “Raise Your Glass’ is bound to be a sure-fire winner in the live stakes. A big song which lends itself to a sing along

I’m impressed with this debut album. The songs are well written and well-constructed, if anything it’s a bit too set in its formula for each song, but I do want to hear where else this band will take their music. It has found its way onto my playlist and will be staying there. A very tasty album indeed. The single releases were certainly an appetiser for this a very delicious main course.
