ALBUM REVIEW: FOREIGNWOLF’s Album “Tempered Hearts” Hits Hard & Fast

Foreignwolf have released their four track EP “Tempered Hearts” and it’s a real hard hitter that’s easy to listen too.

It may be controversial, but the opening track “Hard to Bear” is like an edgier Nickleback (who actually are a very good band, never mind the funny memes!) Its punchy, catchy, and delivers. The slow intro gives way to a full-on wall of noise that has a swaying rhythm throughout before it breaks back to allow the clear vocals of Gerard McCann. Its also lovely to hear a singer from Northern Ireland not sound like they are from just down the street. His vocals wrap around the heavy riffs like velvet to give it that melancholy edge. Drums, bass and guitars blend perfectly.

Next up is “Charity” which just swings in with a slow but more up tempo feel. Foreignwolf are really going hell for leather for that post-grunge hard rock sound and they nail it completely. It also feels a little like a heavier slowed down Foo Fighters. This is a song that would have been on repeat on MTV in the late 90s. The passion that comes through vocally with clear aggression and the heavy symmetry of the guitars pushed on by drum and basslines is superb.

Then comes “These Tempered Hearts” has a definite Foo Fighters feels with the speed firing on all cylinders and the vocals having a wispy reminiscence to Dave Grohl. Another catchy as hell tune that just doesn’t give you time to think.

Last but not least is “Breathe” that immediately catches a certain generation of gamer right in the stomach with a massive punch of nostalgia. It is very reminiscent of the theme of Command & Conquer Red Alert, an iconic RTS of the 90s. And “Breathe” is just a beautiful track that combines that chugging unstoppable militaristic rhythm with a mx of post-grunge and metalcore vocals. The whole package is just a thing of beauty that will make you want to headbang the hell out of the song.

Foreignwolf deliver an EP chock full of post-grunge in your face rock, and while it has that late 90’s feel the freshness of the sound clearly defines it as right up to date.
