NEWS: Watch out for the Tiny Nuclear Reactor from VERN MATZ
Out now from VERN MATZ is their single “Tiny Nuclear Reactor”
This is a very catchy little indie rock/pop track that is just a beautiful melancholic piece with harmonies and melodies that will, oddly enough, just bring a smile to your face. The soft sound of the strumming guitars, light frolicking beat of the drums, and the wistfulness of the vocals delivering soulful lyrics will leave you with that odd 90’s-esque nostalgic indie feel. Its a real little oddball of infectious idiosyncrasy that swirls you round and round in your mind. Definitely a great track to have in-between to lighten the mood and chill out.

Vern Matz is the lovechild of a philosophy student, an investment banker, and a boy with a David Foster Wallace tattoo. True students of alternative history, the trio showcase an earnest approach to songwriting, echoing the work of seminal artists such as Wilco, Pixies, and Mazzy Star, to name a few. The Four Oh Five describes their song “Trampolines” as “one of the most moving singles of the year,” melding “acoustic folk sensibilities with experimental flair.”
Vern Matz formed at Yale University, where the members are currently finishing up their undergraduate studies. The bandmates met at a college party and instantly connected over their mutual admiration for Radiohead—it was like love at first sight. Danny Belgrad—lead singer and guitarist—honed his songwriting sensibilities in the desolate Montana wilderness while on a three-month musical-binge away from society in ‘15. He ate 14 jars of peanut butter and incinerated his copy of Walden. Noah Silvestry—drummer and self-proclaimed “band mother”— comes from a family of indie-rockers who strategically regimented their infant son on a sophisticated diet of indie-goodness. Rumor has it that Silvestry’s first words were “I feel the pain of everyone, then I feel nothing.” Michael Lituchy—pianist and backup vocals—is an amateur scientist who believes UFOs visit earth because they’re big fans of human music. He is also a quality bird caller. Together, the band crafts subtly textured songs with memorable harmonies and melodies that tug at your heartstrings.
Vern Matz’s eponymous debut EP was born out of several road trips between New Haven and Philadelphia. In a lot of ways, the EP is about Vern Matz coming of age—as individuals and as a band. Faced with finding a place in the world, the band shies away from those looming decisions and instead embraces a wistful indifference. Vern Matz says of the record, “Much of the EP expresses of a feeling of displacement and an attempt to restore a sense of wholeness. There’s confusion and nervousness in the fact that you don’t know what needs to be restored. But there is a lot of excitement and emotion in that uneasiness. We were swept up in the idea of nostalgia as style, and the EP very intentionally looks toward past generations of alternative music for inspiration.” The Vern Matz EP was recorded at Miner Street Recordings, produced and mixed by Matt Poirier, and mastered by Greg Calbi and Ryan Schwabe.
