Happy Metal Geek says….
This is a strange mix of feelings. I am sure the whole album will be a fantastic addition to anyone into the underground technical nu-metal industrial sound. For someone not generally into that genre it can immediately sound like a well produced garage band give vent to something akin the teenage angst.
HOWEVER, having listened to the album a couple of times you can begin to unpick the songs and the style and begin to appreciate it more every time you listen to it. I would say for anyone coming to this outside the genre, it is immediately confusing, overwhelming and what feels like just a wall of extreme sound, yet as you go to switch it off or move to a bit of Whitesnake, you falter as if running away from that inimitable horror chasing you in your nightmare where you can only run slowly.
Parasomnia is really a subtle blend of a nightmarish, psychedelic fever dream, catchy tribal back beats, electronica, a smorgasbord of clear and growling vocals, held together by a hypnotic and transfixing cyberpunk effect. It is like an expressionist excursion into metal opening up into a macabre surrealism akin to an arthouse movie. It, intriguingly, becomes more and more an inescapable album. And out of nowhere, just like that, it is an album that you return to time after time to be comforted in its visceral arms of synth metal after a frustrating day.
