ALBUM REVIEW: “Euphorbia” is a breath-taking first Album from BLACK WIDOWS
The debut album “Euphorbia” by Black Widows will be released on 21 February 2025. And the album is an absolute banger for anyone who fancies a bit of dark industrial Euro driving rock. Each song sounds like a heavy metal version of Eurythmics – heavy, driving, catchy and with a distinctive female lead vocal.
The instrumental intro “Initiation” really gets you in the mood and brings back those 90’s goth metal vibes that you can just stick on repeat. Then “Do you Even Know”, “Worth it”, and “Fear” just deliver the same but you can catch that twinge of Euro metal/pop that meld perfectly and you find yourself transported off while you tap your foot and nod your head in time. Synths, pianos, driving guitar riffs and pounding drums all tied up in a black velvet bow with Nina’s beautifully soft but strong and clear vocals.
“The Battle” has that ballad like start that throws a nice slow curveball before it kicks into overdrive that would perfectly open up that moshpit and so it goes back and forth so you don’t get to used to one or the other. “Dancing With the Shadow” has that gothic pounding metal feel as if you have just walked into the middle of fight between vampire clans (my money is on Tremere and Toreador). “Crossroads” is a true metal ballad that could have come straight out of “The Lost Boys”, “Silence” brings out a little bit of early Sinead O’Connor in style which works perfectly for me. “Black Widow” has that slow rumbling, driving rhythm that you just don’t want to stop and the final song “Hungry” has that Led Zep high hat sound in the background which the guitars come in with a solid punchy rhythm while Nina slams home the vocals, especially with the chorus when the riffage ramps up to 11.
Overall, this is an excellently produced and professional first album with Triple A sound quality and delivers solid dark grooved up tracks that will have you moving one way or another. each song feels like you have just dropped into the middle of gig and you want to start singing along. This is an album i can very easily and happily listen to over and over.
